The Day of Resurrection (2016)
for double SATB choir | 00:03:00
by Melissa Dunphy | text by John of Damascus
Commissioned by the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus (Philip Barnes, Artistic Director) with the support of Linda and Bruce Ryder, for the SLCC's composer-in-residence program.
"[Composer-in-residence Melissa Dunphy's] “The Day of Resurrection” is written for double choir, a Chamber Chorus specialty, with liturgical echoes. Written mostly in 7/8 time, the music has an urgency that reflects the triumphal theme of the words. The new piece is a winner, and the choir gave it a superb performance." [St. Louis Post-Dispatch]
The Day of Resurrection
Adapted from the Paschal Canon by John of Damascus
The day of resurrection!
Alleluia! Let it shine!
The passover of gladness.
The passover of God.
For Christ has brought us
from death to life,
from earth to heaven.
Triumph! Sing triumph!
Let us purify our hearts
and behold
the radiant light
of resurrection
and hear: "Rejoice!"
Triumph! Sing triumph!
Let the heavens rejoice,
the earth be glad,
and all things seen and unseen
sing triumph! Alleluia!
For our eternal joy has risen!
